The Panthers hired away Chargers DB coach Steve Wilks to be the team's new secondary coach/passing-defense coordinator on Monday, confirming an earlier report.

Wilks is a Charlotte native who worked under Ron Rivera on the staffs of the Chargers and Bears. He spent the last three seasons working with the Chargers' secondary and was also the assistant head coach last season.

Wilks replaces DB coach Ron Meeks, who was relieved of his duties on Friday.
