If the Packers had their druthers, they would prefer not to lose free-agent QB Matt Flynn without getting back something in return. The one way to accomplish that goal would be to slap a franchise tag on Flynn and then trade him, although such a move is technically illegal. Although we hear the team can't help but be intrigued by the idea of going that route — considering the blockbuster bounty they could land following Flynn's record-setting effort in the regular-season finale — the feeling is that there is too much risk involved in such a move. Without a guaranteed trading partner willing to make the financial adjustments necessary to take Flynn on, the team could be on the hook for the roughly $14 million in salary Flynn would make as a franchised QB. A more likely scenario is that Flynn will make a killing in free agency, and the Packers will franchise TE Jermichael Finley, a move that would cost them a mere $5.4 million by comparison.
