The Panthers rewarded one of their young safeties, Charles Godfrey, with a contract extension just before the start of the 2011 season. He was heading into his contract year, just as Panthers S Sherrod Martin will be before next season starts, but sources don't expect Martin to get the same treatment from the team.

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson didn't have much to say about Martin, other than that he plays safety, when he sat down with the Charlotte Observer for an interview this week. We're hearing there is frustration with Martin, a second-round pick in '09, within the front office.

Martin started every game in '11 and started all 15 games he played in during the '10 season. He hasn't made the strides the front office and coaching staff would like to have seen from him, though, despite showing the physical ability that attracted the team to him in the first place.

Martin will be on the hot seat heading into next season.
