The Steelers placed rookie OLB Chris Carter on injured reserve Wednesday and promoted rookie RB Chad Spann from the practice squad to replace him.

Carter missed the last five games of the regular season with a hamstring injury. The 22-year-old Fresno State product played in eight games this season, notching three tackles on defense.

Spann, an undrafted free agent from Northern Illinois, joins a Steelers RB corps that lost starter Rashard Mendenhall to a season-ending ACL tear on Sunday. The 5-9, 198-pound Spann originally signed with the Colts and has also spent time on the Buccaneers' practice squad.

The way we see it

Steelers starting LOLB LaMarr Woodley (hamstring) is expected to play Sunday at Denver, which allows the Steelers to move Jason Worilds into a reserve role. RILB Lawrence Timmons also can play outside linebacker.

Spann's addition comes with reserve RB Mewelde Moore's status for the wild-card game in question because of a knee injury. If Moore is out, Isaac Redman and John Clay will be the Steelers' top two backs.

Redman has been Mendenhall's top backup all season. Clay, a rookie from Wisconsin, was promoted from the practice squad on Dec. 22.
