If Colts head coach Jim Caldwell is back in 2012 — and the Colts' signs of life at the end of the season could go a long way toward saving his job — we hear defensive coordinator Mike Murphy is also likely to return. Coinciding with Indianapolis' two-game winning streak has been a defensive resurgence under Murphy. Said vice chairman Bill Polian on his weekly radio show: "We are back to the original Tony Dungy version of this defense."

We hear Murphy deserves a ton of credit for simplifying things for the players and communicating in a way that the players are responding to. "Guys seem to know where to be," one source on the scene said.

On his radio show, Polian also floated the idea of MLB Pat Angerer perhaps moving to the weak side if MLB Gary Brackett, who carries a cap number of $7.4 million in '12, returns. We hear that Angerer has shown the versatility and playmaking ability to make a smooth transition to one of the premier spots in a Tampa-2 scheme.
