Patriots LB Jerod Mayo has agreed to a five-year extension with the team, keeping the centerpiece of Bill Belichick's defense in place for the near future.
Mayo, a first round pick in 2008, has been a highly productive player since entering the NFL. He is second on the team in tackles this season with 68 despite missing a pair of games in the middle of the season with a sprained knee. Mayo also has a pair of interceptions.
Last season, Mayo had 174 tackles and was selected to his first Pro Bowl.
Terms of the contract were not released.
