The Patriots released rookie DB Malcolm Williams on Thursday, the team announced.

Williams, the Patriots' seventh-round pick from April's draft, played on special teams in Sunday's win against the Redskins. He has spent two stints on the Patriots' practice squad.

The open roster spot could go to S Ross Ventrone, if S Patrick Chung is not healthy enough to play on Sunday. Williams would be a candidate to return to the practice squad.
