The Cowboys placed QB Jon Kitna on injured reserve with a back injury Wednesday and signed WR Dwayne Harris to the active roster.
Kitna has been bothered by the back for weeks and has been the emergency third QB since then. Stephen McGee has been the backup, and the team will go with two quarterbacks for the time being.
The Cowboys put in a claim for Kyle Orton after he was released by the Broncos and have monitored the free-agent QB options out there. They could opt to stick with two active QBs — which they have done in the past with Tony Romo and Kitna — or could look to sign another one if the right player becomes available.
Kitna, 38, is 37th on the all-time passing list is under contract through 2013. He has base salaries of $2.9 million and $3.1 million the next two seasons, respectively.
Harris was on the Cowboys' active roster for the first five games of the season before being released and re-signed to the practice squad. He did not catch a pass in those five games but did return 11 punts (for 73 yards) and five kickoffs (for 74 yards).
A source told PFW that the Cowboys will sign QB Chris Greisen, 35, to their practice squad. The former UFL and Arena League star spent time on the Cowboys last season, being called up for the final game of the season, but he hasn't attempted an NFL pass since the 2000 season with the Cardinals. In two seasons with the Cardinals in '99 and '00, Greisen completed 7-of-16 passes for 69 yards with one TD.
