The Colts announced Monday that they have claimed LB Zac Diles off waivers from Tampa Bay, waived TE Mike McNeill and placed CBs Jerraud Powers and Terrence Johnson on injured reserve.
Diles. a five-year veteran, played seven games this season with the Buccaneers before being waived Dec. 3. The 6-2, 245-pound Diles played his first four NFL seasons with the Texans before signing with the Rams as a free agent this past summer. He was cut by St. Louis after training camp and signed with Tampa on Sept. 4.
In 57 games (30 starts), Diles has compiled 206 tackles (150 solo) one sack, one interception, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and three passes defensed.
Powers started all 12 games at right cornerback and totaled 51 tackles, six passes defensed and two interceptions.
Johnson played in 10 games this season with two starts and totaled 33 tackles (25 solo).
The way we see it
Losing Powers, the Colts' most talented and experienced corner, and Johnson, their nickel back who has shown flashes, leaves Indianapolis awfully thin and lacking experience in the secondary.
The onus will be on Jacob Lacey, who struggled mightily before being demoted earlier in the season, and sixth-round rookie Chris Rucker to fill the void.
Indianapolis' defense could ill afford another injury and Powers was one of its top performers! Look for Ravens QB Joe Flacco to test Lacey and Rucker early and often in Week 14.
