In his first season as the Bengals' offensive coordinator, Jay Gruden has received widespread praise for his work. The way we hear it, Gruden's ability to communicate and adapt are among his notable strengths. With less time than usual to work with players to install his West Coast scheme because of the lockout, Gruden has nonetheless overseen a successful implementation of the offense. His work with QB Andy Dalton has also drawn raves. In a recent interview with PFW, WR coach James Urban said that Gruden had done well "playing to Andy's strengths." While the West Coast scheme is known for its emphasis on shorter and, ideally, higher-percentage passes, Dalton has also shown an ability to connect downfield with WR A.J. Green. As one source put it, "It would be a shame to not be using your talent." Indeed, Gruden has clearly shown he knows how to use his personnel in the right ways.
