Major injuries at offensive tackle and wide receiver have no doubt been greatly responsible for the ineffectiveness of the Rams' offense much of the season. But it's a lot more difficult trying to explain why the Rams have the league's worst run defense by such a wide margin. One factor that team insiders believe contributed to the run defense's pathetic effort against the Cardinals and Beanie Wells (27-228-1) in Week 12 was the absence of steady DRT Justin Bannan, who has been sidelined with a shoulder injury. "But the overall play at defensive tackle has been disappointing," said one daily team observer. "It really does look like age might have caught up to (starting DLT) Fred Robbins. And the team's tendency to overpursue cutback runs predates the current regime." The Rams' run defense actually had shown improvement in the last month before completely breaking down vs. Arizona.
