Here's a look at a key matchup heading into Sunday's battle between the Chiefs and Bears.
Chiefs run defense vs. Bears RB Matt Forté
Forté had only 12 carries last week — his fewest in a game since Week Three. He gained 59 yards on the ground, but 33 of them came on one run. He struggled to find much room to run on his 11 other attempts, but it surprised some that he didn't get more opportunities to run the ball with QB Caleb Hanie making his first career start.
Mike Martz is tempted to get away from the running game when the Bears are trailing, even in a close game, and it will be important for Chicago to establish the running game early and put Hanie in manageable situations.
The Chiefs are ranked 26th vs. the run have allowed 169.7 yards rushing per game (4.3 yards per carry) since Week 10. Teams have pounded the ball on the ground against Kansas City, but the run "D" help up well against RB Rashard Mendenhall last week. Chiefs defenders made plays behind the line of scrimmage — they had five tackles for loss, and only one was a sack. ILB Derrick Johnson has good instincts and is a solid tackler — he's among the league leaders with 92 stops — and Forté could have a very productive day if his blockers are able to get to the second level and seal off Johnson's path to the ball.
