Bears safeties Conte, Wright making most of opportunity

The Bears made changes at safety after a Week Five loss, demoting Chris Harris and Brandon Meriweather, and a lack of stability at the position has been a theme throughout Lovie Smith's tenure. The sample size is limited on the current starting duo of rookie FS Chris Conte and second-year SS Major Wright, but they've provided an upgrade at safety this season and are getting a chance to prove they can be long-term answers. They have been the starting safeties in all but one of the last five games — Wright was inactive in Week Seven. Conte has displayed better discipline than Meriweather did. Wright brings more speed and range than Harris offered. Although Harris was released, the Bears still have Meriweather, a two-time Pro Bowler, backing up. He played in a few series in Week 11, but because he signed a one-year deal before the season, he'll be looking in free agency for a team that will give him a chance to start.
