When asked about the Chiefs' quarterback depth in August, one insider was shocked the team would start the season with such little depth behind Matt Cassel. Tyler Palko, who hadn't impressed during his four seasons as a pro, was the second string, and rookie fifth-round pick Ricky Stanzi would be the emergency quarterback. The insider said Palko was "awful" in training camp and that Stanzi "is not even ready for the No. 2 job."

Now, with Cassel likely done for the season because of hand injury, it will be up to those backups to carry the team down the stretch, where six of the seven Chiefs opponents have records over .500 through Week 10. Palko will make his first career start on Monday night of Week 11 vs. the Patriots; the game also will mark the first time Stanzi will be active in his career.

Head coach Todd Haley has said the team is comfortable with Palko in the game, but we hear that changes to the offense are likely in store. Expect to see more short and safe throws, as the team tries to hide Palko's shortcomings. If Stanzi is forced to play, which is unlikely unless another injury takes place, the team would not ask him to do too much other than hand off and make simple plays.
