The Bears addressed needs on the interior of the defensive line in the draft and free agency, and it has given them the depth to rotate in backups at nose tackle and three-technique without much of a drop-off in performance. The same cannot be said for the situation at defensive end. Chicago took a flier on Jets draft bust Vernon Gholston in free agency, but he didn't make the team after a nondescript preseason and is out of the league. Corey Wootton, a fourth-round pick in 2010, is healthy again after an injury-plagued first half of the season, but he was inactive in Week 10 and doesn't appear to be making progress. Undrafted rookie Mario Addison and ex-Bear Nick Reed, who was released this week and replaced by journeyman Chauncey Davis, have had opportunities to spell starting DEs Julius Peppers and Israel Idonije at times this season. None of them has had staying power in the rotation, and the Bears' search for help at D-end is ongoing.
