PFW executive editor and resident Packers expert Dan Arkush presents the fifth of five key matchups in the Packers' Week 10 game Monday night against the Vikings at Lambeau Field.
Vikings SS Jamarca Sanford and OLBs Chad Greenway and Erin Henderson vs. Packers TE Jermichael Finley
A few more Vikings defenders besides the three featured in this matchup could become involved in covering Finley, who can continue to be expected to line up all over the field, both as a tight end and a wideout. There is reason to believe Finley, who has TD catches in each of the last two games, could be on the verge of a very productive outing against a vulnerable Vikings secondary. Every week, it seems, a different Packers receiver puts up gaudy numbers. Finley has been lying relatively low since his huge three-TD game in Week Three vs. the Bears, and the odds are strong the talented tight end will chomping at the bit to put on a primetime show Monday evening.
In the first game against Minnesota this season — in which Tyrell Johnson started at strong safety in place of Jamarca Sanford (concussion) — Finley was targeted only twice and had two catches for 13 yards. One of them, though, was a two-yard TD that gave the Packers a 27-17 lead. In his 5-44-1 performance vs. the Chargers, Finley made two outstanding grabs.
Sanford offers good toughness but struggles in space. Greenway is very instinctive and has done a good job covering top tight ends previously this season. He held Chargers TE Antonio Gates in check with eight catches for 74 yards in Week One and limited Tampa Bay's Kellen Winslow to four catches for 44 yards one week later. Henderson, the younger brother of starting MLB E.J. Henderson, also has good instincts, but Finley's strength and size advantage over both of the Vikings' starting OLBs is considerable.
