Seattle's kick-coverage units, a major area of strength in 2010, arguably have been the team's biggest disappointment so far this season. "It goes back to the infusion of so much youth early on and then a lot of key guys getting banged up," one daily team observer said of the only unit in the league to give up two punt returns and a kickoff return for touchdowns. "The punter (Jon Ryan) and the placekicker (Steven Hauschka) have both been good enough, but poor coverage was the key factor in losses to both the Niners and Bengals." Leon Washington's lack of success returning kickoffs also has been a major downer. "He's more explosive than ever, but you have to wonder if the new kickoff rules have hurt him," the observer said of Washington, whose one return for a score this season was nullified by a penalty. "He already had two kickoff returns for touchdowns by this time last season."
