If pressed to pick the 49ers' most unsung performer up to now, most close team observers would have to give strong consideration to C Jonathan Goodwin, a free-agent addition out of New Orleans who is earning increasingly high marks. "He's just been great," one observer said. "In a pretty complex run game with linemen shuttling in and out constantly, he's exactly what you want in a center for this offense. He's hardworking and smart, and he's been exceptional getting to the second level. A lot of the Niners' big runs have come after he's cleared away the inside linebacker." On a line with a host of highly emotional players, Goodwin also earns his keep with the calming influence he provides. "He understands and knows what he's doing and gets everybody organized quickly and efficiently," Niners offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. "He's 'Cool Hand Luke' in there at the center position."
