The Bills' run defense still has some holes, but it is improved from last season when it ranked last in the league. Part of the success should be attributed to free-agent acquisition Nick Barnett.
Barnett replaced ILB Paul Posluszny and has done what Poz struggled to do — make big plays. Barnett has a sack, a forced fumble and two interceptions — one of which he returned for a touchdown. He also is second on the team with 58 tackles.
The way we hear it, Barnett was an immediate leader once he joined Buffalo, helping replace Posluszny in that aspect, and he understands the defense well. He is making an impact on and off the field with the upstart Bills.
"Besides the physical qualities of speed, instincts and things like that, he brings an energy to our defense and to our team," head coach Chan Gailey said this week. "Every time he walks on the field he's got energy, whether it's practice or a game. He's brought a great little edge to us as well."
