Here is a look at how the Patriots' first-year players performed in the team's Week Eight loss to the Steelers.
ORT Nate Solder (first round, 17th overall) — With Sebastian Vollmer back from injury, Solder split time, but he did get the start at right tackle. Solder also had two snaps as an extra tight end, according to ESPN Boston. Bill Belichick will continue to find ways to keep the athletic Solder on the field, even with Vollmer healthy.
RB Stevan Ridley (3, 73) — Ridley has fallen off a bit over the past few weeks. He was active but did not play in Sunday's loss, deferring carries to Kevin Faulk and kickoff returns to Danny Woodhead. It's possible that the Patriots simply wanted the veterans getting the extra time vs. the Steelers, but it's worth watching Ridley's playing time going forward.
Notes— CB Ras-I Dowling (2, 33) was placed on injured reserve last Friday. ... RB Shane Vereen (2, 56) and QB Ryan Mallett (3, 74) were both inactive. ... LB Jeff Tarpinian (undrafted) and LS Danny Aiken (undrafted) both played but did not record a stat.
