Ex-Bears S Chris Harris, whom the Lions reportedly claimed off waivers Friday, figures as the Lions' third safety, the way we hear it. Detroit has a solid starting tandem in Louis Delmas (free) and Amari Spievey (strong), but the feeling is Harris will upgrade the Lions' depth behind the starters, which has taken a hit with Erik Coleman and Vincent Fuller suffering season-ending injuries. Speaking on condition of anonymity, two personnel men familiar with Harris say his intangibles and physicality are strengths. Harris is regarded as a smart player with good leadership skills who is better playing close to the line of scrimmage, we're told. However, one evaluator says that Harris' speed is a concern. Harris is a solid tackler, the evaluator tells PFW, but this season he hasn't taken good angles at times, which can be a sign of declining speed. Harris, 29, started the season opener for Chicago but suffered a hamstring injury and didn't return until Week Five at Detroit. He struggled in that game and was benched, returning to the starting lineup in Week Seven because of an injury to Major Wright. However, Chicago waived him Thursday.
