The Browns signed RB Chris Ogbonnaya off Houston's practice squad Tuesday and waived third-string RB Armond Smith, the team announced.
Ogbonnaya, 25, appeared in two games for the Texans this season, rushing three times for six yards. He played in two games for the Rams in 2009, rushing for 50 yards on 11 carries and catching one pass for 19 yards. Ogbonnaya (6-0, 225) played collegiately at Texas.
Smith, a rookie from Union College (Ky.), appeared in three games for Cleveland, rushing three times for two yards.
The way we see it
The Browns' starting running back, Peyton Hillis, suffered a hamstring injury on Sunday, and his status for Sunday's game vs. Seattle is uncertain. If Hillis can't go, Montario Hardesty will start, with Ogbonnaya the likely backup if the Browns don't make any other roster moves. Cleveland has three backs on the active roster, and another running back (Xavier Omon) on its practice squad.
