The Seahawks have placed CB Marcus Trufant on injured reserve because of a back spasms and signed DT Jason Shirley to their 53-man roster.

Trufant, who has started 123 games in his career with the Seahawks and is the longest-tenured member of the team, was hurt in the team's Week Four loss to the Falcons and was held out the past two games. Head coach Pete Carroll said the pain in Trufant's back was so severe he couldn't bend over to tie his shoes.

Walter Thurmond has been starting in Trufant's place the past two weeks and likely will remain in the lineup.

Shirley, who was selected in the fifth round of the 2008 draft by the Bengals, played in three games that season for Cincinnati but hasn't been on an active NFL roster since. The 6-5, 338-pound Fresno State product had spent a couple seasons on the Bengals' practice squad attempting to convert to offensive guard but will be returning to his old position in Seattle.
