Free-agent QB David Garrard will undergo surgery for a herniated disc in his back, making him unavailable to be signed by a team in the coming weeks. The news was first reported by Jay Glazer of FOX Sports.

Garrard, who started 76 career games for the Jaguars from 2002-10, was released by Jacksonville just days before their season opener this September. The quarterback had been suffering from back problems throughout training camp, missing part of the preseason as a result of the injury. He would have been owed around $8 million from the Jaguars for 2011 had he remained on the roster.

According to Glazer, the QB was contacted by the Raiders on Monday morning to see if he would be available to come to Oakland for a workout, as the team is looking for a fill-in for the injured Jason Campbell. Garrard wanted to be up front about his injury, which is where the news of his surgery was announced.

The way we see it

Jacksonville head coach Jack Del Rio was heavily criticized for his handling of the Garrard situation at the start of the season, but if he knew that the QB would be out for an extended period of time because of his back problems, the choice to release him may have been a wise one.

This also takes a veteran QB off the market for teams in need of one, starting with the Raiders, who have to look elsewhere.
