The Jaguars spent a lot of money upgrading the defense this offseason. One of the byproducts of using nearly all their resources on "D" was allowing P Adam Podlesh to sign with the Bears. Jacksonville went bargain-bin shopping for a punter, signing 43-year-old Matt Turk, who was released this week after just five games. The final straw for the veteran punter came in Week Five, when he booted a 22-yard punt in the shadow of his own goal line late in the fourth quarter with the Jaguars clinging to a four-point lead. Jacksonville went on to lose the game and Turk went on to lose his job. We hear the Turk signing was doomed from the beginning, as asking the 16-year veteran to try directional punting for the first time was ill-conceived. Making matters worse, Turk's replacement, Nick Harris, was cut by the Lions after Week One, but the Jaguars endured Turk's struggles another month before making the switch.
