It's bad enough Jason Smith, the second overall pick in the 2009 draft, continues to look like a major bust at right tackle. Making much matters much worse is the feeling among our team sources that starting OLT Rodger Saffold, who was such a pleasant surprise as a rookie last season, has performed even worse than Smith so far this season. "I wish I could tell you what the problem is," one team insider said of Saffold. "I will say that, with the receivers running deeper routes, the tackles have had to hold their blocks longer. And he's had to deal with some pretty good pass rushers. I do know he's clearly frustrated." The consensus seems to be, however, that it's way too early to give up on Saffold considering how well he played last season. "I think he's a good player who's just been in a real tough sophomore slump," the insider said. "The guy had very few hiccups last year. I still think he has all the right tools."
