Welcome to "Beauty vs. the Beast," a handicapping feature designed to track how the teams that are bet the most and the least at a given sportsbook in a given week fare. Each week, I'll put down a mythical 100 units on each of the games and see what happens.

We enter the third week of this handicapping experiment, and the "Beauty" is still searching for its first win. Meanwhile, the "Beast" is 2-0 against the spread after Seattle covered the 4½ last week vs. Atlanta. Overall, I'm showing a "profit" of 81.12 units, and I have to tell you, I've had one or two ... er, a few*** Las Vegas trips where I would have taken that gladly.

Our Week Five beauty is the Lions. Jimmy Vaccaro, the director of sports operations and public relations at Lucky's Race and Sports Book in Nevada, reports that Detroit has been heavily bet in recent weeks. He noted that wagers on Detroit outpaced Dallas bets 2:1 last week, which is no small feat, considering how popular the Cowboys traditionally are with the betting publlc. Vaccaro said the majority of sportsbooks were "rooting for the Cowboys" last week. The Lions, slight underdogs, covered and won.

This week's beast is the Jaguars, 1½-point favorites vs. the Bengals. Vaccaro suggested Lucky's will be pulling for Jacksonville, which just hasn't caught the betting public's attention, to cover in 10 of its final 12 games.

*** — Sigh.
