To understand the Vikings' QB situation, you have to understand that head coach Leslie Frazier and Donovan McNabb have a history together, dating back to 1999 when they were both on the Eagles. Frazier handpicked McNabb as the team's bridge to first-rounder Christian Ponder, and the Vikings' internal belief was that they were a better football team than most gave them credit for being. An 0-4 start later, the team is left to figure out where to go from here. The Vikes don't want to bench McNabb now and have to come back to him later if Ponder is not ready, and it's not easy to sit a QB that cost them $5 million and multiple draft picks (two sixth-rounders) in the first place. The question now comes in whether the Vikings can salvage part of their season with McNabb at the helm or if changing to Ponder is the best route for future evaluation. Although McNabb might not be the only issue, his play has not given them enough reason to remain with him unconditionally.
