The Jets announced Monday that OLB Bryan Thomas will miss the rest of the 2011 season with a torn Achilles. Thomas suffered the injury in Sunday night's loss to the Ravens.

The 10-year veteran hasn't missed a game since 2004. In four games this season he made 14 tackles and one pass defensed.

Thomas has played in 145 games for the Jets. He started 12 games last season and recorded six sacks. He has 31 sacks in his career. Jamaal Westerman replaced Thomas in the game.

Thomas is due to be a free agent at the end of the season.

The way we see it

The Jets like what they see out of Westerman in terms of pass rushing, but he is a big downgrade. Thomas is a veteran leader for a defense that needs to improve. Recently signed Aaron Maybin adds depth, but this is a big loss for the Gang Green.
