The Colts have picked up where they left off last year with injuries. On Sept. 28, Indianapolis announced it had placed two starters, MLB Gary Brackett and SS Melvin Bullitt, on injured reserve with shoulder injuries. Brackett's replacement, second-year player Pat Angerer, is coming into his own and is not a huge drop-off from the 31-year-old Brackett. Replacing Bullitt, we hear, could prove to be more difficult. Second-year player David Caldwell started in Bullitt's place in Week Three, allowing Steelers WR Mike Wallace to get behind him on an 81-yard catch-and-run for a score. A pair of rookies, undrafted Joe Lefeged and Rams fifth-rounder Jermale Hines, who was cut by St. Louis on Sept. 28, also could be in the mix for playing time. The Colts have done an admirable job early this season plugging guys in, with former starters Philip Wheeler (at strong-side linebacker) and Mike Pollak (at right guard) playing well in a pinch, but the lack of proven depth in the secondary is a concern.
