While the Chargers were hopeful that Bob Sanders would stay healthy longer than two games, the team knew when it signed the safety that injuries were a serious concern. With that in mind, it prepared backup SS Steve Gregory to see the field a lot during training camp and preseason and played him often in nickel situations early on.
Now, with Sanders on I.R. because of a knee injury, Gregory steps into the starting lineup without much transition needed. The sixth-year pro is not the run defender Sanders was but is still solid in that department. He does provide an upgrade in pass coverage, as the undersized Sanders was abused repeatedly in the Chargers' Week Two loss to New England by the Patriots' big tight ends. We hear the team is confident moving forward with Gregory, though losing Sanders is an overall downgrade for the defense.
