The Patriots signed S Ross Ventrone to their 53-man roster on Saturday, adding depth to a position of need for the team. Ventrone had previously been on the team's practice squad. He fills the roster spot vacated by TE Dan Gronkowski, who was released on Friday.
Ventrone, a 5-8, 190-pound safety, spent much of the 2010 season on the New England practice squad, along with the first two weeks of this season. He was undrafted out of Villanova. Starting safety Patrick Chung has been declared out for Sunday's game, and the other starting safety, Josh Barrett, appears on the Patriots' injury report this week, so Ventrone could be pressed into action quickly.
The team also signed LB A.J. Edds to replace Ventrone on the practice squad. Edds was released earlier in the week but is now back with the organization.
