The Patriots released TE Dan Gronkowski on Friday, the team announced.

Gronkowski, the brother of Patriots starting TE Rob Gronkowski, played in the team's first two games, mainly as a blocking back. Dan Gronkowski spent the 2009 season with the Lions and the 2010 campaign with the Broncos.

The Patriots are without TE Aaron Hernandez for at least this Sunday and maybe longer.

The way we see it

TE Garrett Mills is on the team's practice squad and could get activated for Sunday, depending on what the team believes it needs vs. the Bills. The Pats also could add a tackle, such as Thomas Welch, who is on the practice squad, with OT Sebastian Vollmer ruled out for Sunday.
