According to ESPN Boston, Patriots S Patrick Chung had surgery on his injured right thumb this week. The Patriots' starter apparently suffered the injury in the third quarter of last Sunday's win over the Chargers.

Chung finished the San Diego game with a cast over his thumb and it's not known if he will be able to play against the Bills Sunday. He did not practice Wednesday.

If Chung cannot play, Josh Barrett and James Ihedigbo are other options to line up next to Sergio Brown.

Barrett also has been playing with a cast on his right thumb.

The way we see it

If Chung can't play against the Bills' high-powered offense, it would be a big blow to the Patriots. What once was a deep position was thinned by the cuts of James Sanders and Brandon Meriweather in the preseason. Chung's absence would further deplete the position.
