Jaguars rookie QB Blaine Gabbert will make his first regular-season start Sunday against the Panthers, the team confirmed Wednesday. He replaces Luke McCown, who started the first two games of the season.
Gabbert made one preseason start against the Patriots and played in relief of McCown last Sunday against the Jets, completing 5-6 passes for 52 yards. McCown was benched after completing just 6-of-19 passes for 59 yards with four interceptions (1.8 passer rating) in Week Two.
In two games this season, McCown has completed 23-43 passes for 234 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions.
The Way We See It
When Gabbert was drafted, he was expected to be Jacksonville's QB-of-the-future. But after McCown's horrific game against the Jets, the future had to come a bit early.
Head coach Jack Del Rio is under pressure this season and is looking for anything to bring a spark to his team. However, the move to a rookie quarterback only dims Jacksonville's playoff hopes this season.
Expect to see typical rookie struggles from Gabbert as he adjusts to life as a NFL starting QB.
