Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said on Sunday evening he is unsure who his team's starting quarterback will be next week when the team faces the Panthers. Luke McCown has started Jacksonville's first two games of the season, but was benched in favor of rookie Blaine Gabbert during a Week Two blowout loss to the Jets.
When asked about whom the Week Three starter would be, Del Rio said it will not strictly be his decision.
"My answer is we'll discuss that as a staff," Del Rio said. "What I can tell you now is I made the decision in this ballgame to let Blaine play and let him get a little experience. We'll go from here."
McCown struggled against New York, throwing four interceptions and finishing with a QB Rating of 1.8. Gabbert came in and completed five of six passes for 52 yards.
The way we see it
Del Rio has very little choice but to play the rookie. After trading up in the draft to select Gabbert and releasing David Garrard the week of the season opener, the Jaguars have hitched their wagon completely to the strong right arm of the former Missouri quarterback. McCown is a serviceable player, but if Del Rio wants any chance of competing for the AFC South title this year, he'll have Gabbert facing off against Cam Newton this weekend.
