One of the forgotten men prior to this season on the Redskins' offense was TE Fred Davis, who was uneven in his first few seasons and remained behind Chris Cooley on the depth chart. The common thought was that with eight wide receivers on the opening 53-man roster, Davis would be far down the list of likely pass catchers most Sundays. Davis proved that wrong in Week One with a breakout game, totaling 105 yards and giving QB Rex Grossman an effective seam receiver, something he hadn't done a lot of previously. Santana Moss, Jabar Gaffney and even Anthony Armstrong might all catch more passes than Davis does this season, but they don't fill the receiving void in that part of the field. Davis dropped 15 pounds this offseason to fill the role that offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan had Owen Daniels playing in Houston and that head coach Mike Shanahan had Shannon Sharpe running in Denver. No one is putting Davis on the level of Sharpe — or even Daniels, for that matter — yet. But he does look more dangerous in this new role with a modified body shape.
