The Colts dipped into free agency more than usual this offseason, signing former first-round DEs Tyler Brayton and Jamaal Anderson to strengthen the club's penetrable run "D." The new additions were ineffective in Week One in Houston, however, as the Texans amassed 167 rushing yards on 41 carries en route to a 34-7 shellacking of the overmatched Colts. Making matters worse, vice chairman Bill Polian said on his weekly radio show that 2010 first-round DE Jerry Hughes was deactivated for the game because the presence of Brayton and Anderson, when paired with edge rushers Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, meant there was no room for Hughes. Because he was a late bloomer at TCU, Hughes should not yet be considered a bust. But we hear that a guy with his speed and athleticism should at least be making contributions as a situational pass rusher by now, which suggests that Hughes may be struggling to grasp the mental part of the game.
