The Giants have been stung as badly as any team this preseason with injuries, and a recent injury struck one of their more underrated players. Jonathan Goff started 16 games at middle linebacker last season and proved to be a steadying force inside. Even if he was not spectacular last season, the unfortunate part is that Goff appeared to have improved in the preseason. Still, he played a position the Giants already were lean at, so his loss for the season could prove to be a major one. Rookie Greg Jones, a sixth-round pick, made the roster with a nice preseason but suddenly was vaulted to the starting lineup before he ever practiced with the first unit, amazingly. Learning the defensive calls and knowing how to fight off blocks will be two major hurdles, although team insiders say the coaches were impressed with Jones' preparation and intelligence, as well as his knack for finding the ball on running plays.
