Cowboys rookie OT Tyron Smith hurt his knee in practice on Wednesday, although the injury is not as serious as once feared.

Smith, one of three rookies expected to start on the Dallas offensive line this Sunday night against the Jets, hyperextended his knee, causing him to leave practice early. It was thought he had suffered structural damage, which would sideline him for multiple weeks, but an MRI proved that was not the case. A ruling on his availability for this week's game has not been made by the team.

"There are different challenges that we all face every day," head coach Jason Garrett said. "If any of these guys aren't able to play, hopefully the backups understand the value of their opportunity and we can move right along."

Starting CB Mike Jenkins also suffered a knee injury during the same practice. He missed all of preseason with a neck injury.

The team is already without fellow starting CB Terence Newman, meaning nickel back Orlando Scandrick would get the start. If Jenkins is unable to play, former safety Alan Ball also would be in the lineup.
