The Chargers announced Wednesday that they have agreed to a five-year contract extension with P Mike Scifres.

According to Adam Caplan, the five-year deal is worth $18 million with $9 million guaranteed.

"Mike has been a major part of our success over the years," Chargers GM A.J. Smith said. "He is a premier punter and the ultimate team player. We are thrilled he will remain a Charger for years to come."

Scifres, who is one of the best in the NFL at pinning punts inside the 20, has done so on 40.4 percent of his career punts, an astounding rate. Opponents have returned just 40.2 percent of his punts.

He is the franchise's all-time leader for career punting average (44.5 yards) and a member of the Chargers' 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.

Scifres was third in the NFL last season with a punting average of 46.7 yards. His net average was just 30.8 yards, but that was due mostly to very poor coverage units.

"I was fortunate enough to get drafted here and potentially I'm going to be able to end my career here," Scifres said. "It's a great franchise and I couldn't ask for a better place to potentially end my career."

Drafted in the fifth round in 2003, Scifres has spent his entire NFL career with the Chargers and has played in every game in each of the past seven seasons.
