The Patriots cut former second-round CB Darius Butler on Tuesday. "Its been real New England. I was blessed to have a chance to play and start my NFL career here. But its time to open a new chapter," Butler tweeted.

Butler, drafted in 2009, started eight games and appeared in 29 contests in his two seasons. Last season, he opened the season as a starting corner with Leigh Bodden out, but lost his job to Kyle Arrington.

Butler had three picks in his rookie season and returned one for a score. He made 23 tackles and six passes defensed in 2010.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Patriots were unable to trade Butler.

The way we see it

Butler never recovered from losing his job last season, despite given opportunities to win the job at the nickel. Arrington is good against the run and Bodden is back from injury. The team also claimed Antwaun Molden from Houston, who impressed and made the 53-man roster. The Pats' second-round pick in April was also a corner, Ras-I Dowling. It shouldn't take long for another team to claim Butler.
