Rex Grossman will start at quarterback for the Redskins in Week One against the Giants, according to an NFL.com source.

Head coach Mike Shanahan told Grossman and John Beck of his decision over the weekend, according to the source. The two had been battling for the No. 1 job throughout the offseason and preseason, but Beck had been hampered by a groin injury and he was inconsistent in the final preseason game.

Shanahan is expected to monitor the QB situation throughout the season and could make a change at any time.

The way we see it

Although our sources told us that Shanahan had been favoring Beck, the fifth-year player's underwhelming performance in the preseason finale left the head coach with little choice but to name the talented yet inconsistent Grossman as his starter. However, a bad outing or two by Grossman would undoubtedly open the door for Beck to get his opportunity.
