The Patriots shored up a position of need, signing free-agent OG Brian Waters on Saturday, according to a report by ESPN. Waters was in Foxborough on Saturday for a tryout.
Waters, 34, who had been cut by the Chiefs on July 28 following a Pro Bowl career, will provide a veteran presence at a very thin position for New England. Projected starting ORG Dan Connolly injured an ankle in the third preseason game and didn't play in the final exhibition, and backup OG Rich Ohrnberger was placed on injured reserve Saturday. Rookie Marcus Cannon is on the reserve/non-football injury list after undergoing chemotherapy this summer for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and hasn't practiced with the team.
Logan Mankins is firmly entrenched as the starting left guard.
Waters has missed only three games over the past 10 seasons, and he has started every game but those three since 2002. He has been named to five Pro Bowls.
