The Ravens on Sunday signed former Cowboys C Andre Gurode to a one-year contract, pending a physical to be taken Monday.

Gurode, 32, underwent knee surgery in June, and he reportedly declined to restructure a contract that would have paid him $5.5 million this season had he remained in Dallas.

Gurode is expected to back up veteran C Matt Birk. At 6-4, 335 pounds, Gurode is a five-time Pro Bowler (2006-10).

"We just got better as a team," said Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome. "To have a successful season, you have to have quality depth across the board. We just added great depth to the interior of our offensive line with Andre."

The Patriots reportedly had also shown interest in Gurode.

The way we see it

If Gurode can return to good health, his presence would be a boon to the Ravens' depth on the O-line, and he might even push Birk for playing time. However, returning to good health is the key, as the Cowboys reportedly weren't thrilled that Gurode reported to camp in less-than-ideal condition after undergoing surgery during the offseason. Also, some observers say that Gurode didn't deserve to be named to the Pro Bowl last season.
