Having the luxury of first claim on any players placed on waivers, the Panthers combed the list of final cuts and signed five players off waivers Sunday. They also released several players, including DE Everette Brown, their 2009 second-round draft choice.
Carolina signed former Chargers WR Seyi Ajirotutu, ex-Bears DT Marcus Harrison, former Rams DE George Selvie, ex-Raiders S Stevie Brown and ex-Cowboys CB Josh Thomas. Ajirotutu scored two touchdowns for San Diego last season, and Selvie had 1½ sacks in 16 games for St. Louis. Harrison started nine games in three seasons with Chicago, recording three sacks but none last season. Oakland had drafted Brown in the seventh round in 2010, and Dallas selected Thomas in the fifth round in April.
In addition to Brown, the Panthers released OG Bryant Browning, WR David Clowney and DE Thomas Keiser. They also terminated the contract of S Kevin Payne.
Brown had been a disappointment since being drafted with the 43rd overall pick in '09. He had started only three games in two seasons and, despite his quickness off the edge, had recorded only six sacks.
