S Brandon Meriweather wasn't on the free-agent market for long. Just one day after being released by the Patriots, the former Pro Bowler was signed on Sunday by the Bears. The team announced via Twitter it is a one-year contract.
Meriweather, a first-round pick of New England's in 2007, has played in every game since being drafted and been named to the Pro Bowl in each of the past two seasons. However, the Patriots were not happy with his performance, as he often went for big hits instead of smart plays and had some off-field incidents.
The Bears reached a 53-man roster on Saturday, which included five safeties. Three of the five were either rookies or second-year players, and it is clear the team wanted to add more experience in the defensive backfield.
The team will have to release another play to make room for Meriweather.
