In a surprise move, the Patriots have released SS Brandon Meriweather. They also cut loose WR-KR Brandon Tate.

Rumors had circulated that the Patriots were attempting to trade Meriweather, a two-time Pro Bowler, but could not find a deal with which they were pleased. Meriweather has played in every game since he was selected by New England in the first round of the 2007 draft, with 40 starts. He has 12 career interceptions.

Earlier in the week, the Patriots released S James Sanders, who started alongside Meriweather for much of the past few seasons. FS Patrick Chung is the only lock to start at safety for the team this season.

Tate's position on the team grew to be tenuous with the addition of Chad Ochocinco and the presence of 2010 third-rounder Taylor Price.

On Saturday, the team also released OL Thomas Austin, OL Mike Berry, LB Ricky Brown, TE Carson Butler, LB Markell Carter (2011 sixth-round pick), DL Landon Cohen, OL Jonathan Compas, WR Buddy Farnham, RB Eric Kettani, LB Niko Koutouvides, DL Aaron Lavarias, RB Richard Medlin, DE Eric Moore, RB Sammy Morris, DL Darryl Richard, DE Alex Silvestro, TE Lee Smith (2011 fifth-round pick), WR Brandon Tate, WR Tiquan Underwood, DB Ross Ventrone, OL Corey Woods, TE Will Yeatman.

DL Ron Brace, DL Brandon Deaderick and RB Kevin Faulk were all placed on the P.U.P list; rookie OL Marcus Cannon was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list.

OL Rich Ohrnberger was put on injured reserve, ending his season.
