Jets QB Greg McElroy left Thursday night's preseason finale with an injured right (throwing) thumb. According to ESPN New York's Rich Cimini, McElroy underwent surgery Friday morning.
A source told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that McElroy will be out "several weeks." The seventh-round pick out of Alabama was having an impressive preseason. He completed 61 percent of his passes for 335 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
WR Logan Payne, who dislocated his wrist in Monday's preseason game against the Giants, will miss 6-8 weeks after undergoing surgery, Mehta reported.
Payne, the team's No. 5 receiver, remains on the roster. He is a big contributor on special teams.
The way we see it
Rex Ryan said Thursday night that backup QB Mark Brunell (calf) will be ready for the start of the season, but McElroy's injury puts the Jets in the market for a third quarterback.
The Payne injury means Patrick Turner is the team's No. 5 wideout, but Turner doesn't match the contributions that Payne brings to team's coverage units that lost Brad Smith in free agency.
