Instead of serving his sentence during the team's bye week, Bengals RB Cedric Benson surrendered himself to the Travis County (Tex.) Jail late Tuesday, according to PFW correspondent and Cincinnati Enquirer writer Joe Reedy.

Benson was booked at midnight ET for a 2010 assault charge in Austin. On Monday, Benson was sentenced to 20 days in jail, 30 hours of community service and will have to pay restitution to the victim in the form of $5,000.

It was originally thought Benson would turn himself in on Oct. 17, the beginning of Cincinnati's bye week.

According to Reedy, attorneys for both sides said that with credit for good behavior, Benson would serve seven days. He is credited for Tuesday and would be released late Monday or early Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The Bengals open the 2011 season in Cleveland on Sept. 11.

"Cedric decided he needs to complete the jail sentence before the season. This is best for everyone involved," his attorney Sam Bassett said in a statement.

Benson rushed for 1,111 yards and seven scores last season.
